
The colors in his paintings became more vibrant and bright. Van Gogh began painting with intensity and emotion. He loved the vibrant colors and the bright sun of Arles. He rented out a yellow house to live in and invited artist Paul Gauguin to join him. In 1888 van Gogh moved south to Arles, France to start up an artist's commune. In this early part of his career, van Gogh used a lot of dark colors such as browns and dark greens. Eventually he began to paint using oil paints.

He liked to draw pictures of poor hardworking people. When Vincent first started drawing he sketched pictures using pencils or charcoal sticks. At around the age of 27, van Gogh decided to devote himself completely to art. He also worked in a book store, an art gallery, and as a missionary. He worked as a teacher in London and then as a minister.

Vincent had two brothers and three sisters. His father and grandfather were ministers, but others in his family worked in the art world. Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853.

Van Gogh did not begin painting until his late twenties, and most of his best-known works were produced during his final two years. Today, he is widely regarded as one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art. According to the legend, Van Gogh sold only one painting, The Red Vineyard, bought for 400 francs by the painter and art collector Anna Boch. Little appreciated during his lifetime, his fame grew in the years after his death.
